Inspect pads and rotors

We service surge-brake systems commonly found on boat trailers and electric-over-hydraulic disc brakes used on heavier trailers.
Disc brakes use hydraulic pressure to squeeze brake pads against the rotors. Many boat trailers create that pressure with a surge actuator built into the coupler. As the tow vehicle slows, the actuator slides and sends brake fluid to the calipers.
Heavy 9K, 10K, and 12K axle applications often use an electric-over-hydraulic actuator instead. The tow vehicle sends 12-volt power to the actuator, which then supplies hydraulic pressure. These systems add wiring, power, and actuator diagnostics to the normal pad, rotor, caliper, and fluid inspection.
Disc brake parts are generally more expensive than drum brake components. The system type, axle capacity, pad and rotor condition, and actuator health all affect the total.

A surge actuator responds to pressure from the tow vehicle slowing against the trailer coupler. An electric-over-hydraulic system uses 12-volt input from the tow vehicle to run a hydraulic actuator. Both apply hydraulic pressure at the calipers.
Not necessarily. Rotor condition determines whether it can remain in service. If the pad has worn to the metal backing and damaged the rotor, replacement is much more likely.
Yes. Disc brake service can include bleeding the system and replacing the old fluid with new fluid.
